Singing & Social Media

Should you post yourself singing on social media?

Singing is a performing art, but it is also a therapeutic tool. Here is my permission slip to use social media the way that serves you. Maybe start by asking yourself:

Why do you sing?

If your goal is to become a singer, the more practice singing in front of others the better. And at the surface, social media is a digital stage. (Among other things.)

Why do you post?

Is singing to an empty room still performing? We are so pressured to post ourselves that it’s easy to forget that art is also made for art’s sake.

The significance of posting carries as much weight as you want it to. Of course, I tell my students that art and music are meant to be shared, but they are already sharing that art when they sing for a teacher or a friend, or themselves. If it is a goal of yours to sing in front of people, then don’t let the devil on your shoulder stop you. But singing in front of people can mean many things. You can sing a song for someone you know or online to a stranger. You can sing in a church choir or post a recording on Soundcloud. What would make you feel proud? What do you want to accomplish?

If you do not have the desire to sing in front of a stadium of people, then you don’t have to. Whether it is your dream to be discovered, to share music with others, or singing solely for yourself is your choice.
